Install tanks to store treated affluent: Pollution Control Board, Assam

GUWAHATI: The Pollution Control Board, Assam (PCBA) has made the installation of treated water storage tanks (TWSTs) mandatory for all hospitals, resorts, and automobile service centres in the state. The PCBA has made it clear that establishments failing to comply with this stricture will attract a minimum environmental compensation of Rs 5,000 per day with effect from October 2, 2023.

In a public notice, the PCBA specifically mentioned that every such establishment will have to install a TWST with the minimum capacity to store 10 KL of treated water from the ETP (effluent treatment plant) or STP (sewerage treatment plant) by October 15, 2023.

The PCBA, however, said that the establishments are at liberty to install the TWSTs either underground or overground. It has, however, made it clear that ETPs should not have any bypass systems and the establishments should mandatorily rout the treated water into TWSTs to let the PCBA collect samples for verification of compliance and examine the adequacy of the ETPs. "All the units must install flow meters at discharge lines from TWSTs and maintain records accordingly," the Board said.

The PCBA has taken such a step to ensure that industrial units do not release affluent without adequate treatment at their sites, as the practice is notorious for water pollution.
